So why are actors paid residuals? Below the line labor do their
work, get paid, and don't (directly) get paid again. Why are actors
different? Didn't Lew Wasserman push the residuals concept in the
1950s in order to attract Hollywood talent to TV, and to get SAG to
sign off on the broadcasting of already-produced films? As well as
get that SAG waiver for his TV production company (allowing MCA to
both hire and represent talent)? If so, it was a brilliant way to
attract stars to a new medium (television). It's also like a
dividend, a kind of equity interest in the future performance of a
work. But talent doesn't put up any of the capital or risk. Now we
have a new medium with very different economics than television.
There's little chance networks and studios will be able to build
the kind of oligopolistic control online that they had on
television. They face an eroding ability to control the
distribution of any content online. With traditional business
models in disarray, do residuals make sense anymore? Or could there
be another way to compensate talent fairly?

Apparently ran out of money. I ordered a coupon and it is pending
additional funding approvals. I sure hope the additional funds are
approved. We need free digital tv. I'm tired of paying the crazy
prices of cable and satellite.

Shelly's summation is without a doubt the most informative, concise
and articulate evaluation of the current impasse I have yet to come
across. Brilliant! The only thing I would add is that, for all
practical purposes, there already is a 'defacto' strike in the
(studio) feature film industry and that this defacto strike has
been underway since at least last spring. I believe this is why SAG
lost virtually all popular support from the trenches of our
industry. Several months ago it was not unusual to find an IATSE
member who vocally supported SAG - I was one myself, in fact - but
their persistent delaying of a strike authorization has served to
drag out an unfortunate situation for far too long. By continually
postponing the vote over the last six months, SAG's leadership has
demonstrated to everyone that the only thing they give a hoot about
is their own members. Which probably explains why there's virtually
no one left in Hollywood who cares for or sympathizes with SAG
anymore. It's called the Golden Rule, Mr. Rosenberg - perhaps
you've heard of it? Steve Graves Local 80
